Mercator Foundation Award

In fall 2008, Stiftung Mercator, the benefactor of Mercator College, decided to extend their involvement in Jacobs University college life by providing an endowment to financially support and encourage two exceptional students from Mercator college. From this year onwards, a sum of 5000 Euros each is to be awarded to one 2nd year and one 3rd year undergraduate student resident at Mercator College for outstanding intercultural, social and academic achievements.

  • 2009-2010 - Tariq Tobias Omarshah & Suna Turhan

Criteria for Eligibility.

- Undergraduate students in 2nd or 3rd year of their study program at Jacobs University Bremen.
- Resident of Mercator College for at least one semester, preferably three semesters with an obligation to continue residing in Mercator College for the duration of their studies.
- Proven excellence in academic, social and intercultural skills at college and university level.
- The student has not been a recipient of this award in the past.

Mercator Award Committee


The candidates will be nominated by Mercator College officials (Staff, COM, RAs, Honorary Members and elected student representatives). It is not possible to nominate oneself. The winners are determined by the Mercator Awards Committee which will be composed of:

- College masters of Mercator College.
- Full member of the Academic Council.
- Director of Resource Development.
- Two honorary faculty members of Mercator College.

The awards will be presented each year on 2nd of December to the prize winning students. This date also commemorates the 414th anniversary of the death of the cartographer, mathematician and theologian Gerhard Mercator, the patron of the college as well as the Stiftung Mercator.
