Review: Cooking Contest 2011

On Saturday, February 19, 2011****, the Mercator Annual Cooking Contest took place in the Mercator Common Room**. All Mercator floors were called for participation in this annual *s*howdown between our floors. Each participating floor has been given a random cook-book from which they chose recipes. This year dishes from South East Asia, Lithuania, the Arab countries, China, Korea, India, and North America were featured. After an enjoyable afternoon with a great variety of outstanding delicious food the jury consisting of Werner Bergholz (Honorary Member of Mercator and Professor of Electrical Engineering), Mandy Boehnke (former College Master of Mercator and Director of Studies at BIGSSS), Elizabeth Zeller (former Mercator student and Junior Admissions Counselor), and Rosa had a tremendous hard time to decide on the first three winners. Judging was done by distributing points for taste, presentation, creativity and punctuality. It is not overexaggerated to say that it has never been as hard as this year. At last, the jury was convinced that there had to be two first prizes which were given to MC1 (North American cuisine) and MC3 (Indian cuisine). While MC1 convinced by presentation (especially verbal explanation) and creativity (e.g. banana leaf wrapped trout in clay prepared in open fire), MC3 convinced by taste covering the diverse aspects of Indian cuisine in a balanced fine tasting meal. Second place went to the floor with the most Haute Cuisine arrangement of Korean food. The winning floors get cash prizes that they can use for floor-events. Fortunately, the College Masters agreed to spend twice 100 Euros for the two first prizes and 80 Euros for the second prize ;-) The participation prize consisting of ice-cream went to MC1 as well! In sum, the afternoon was filled with great atmosphere, high quality of food (of all floors), and team spirit!
