Are we allowed to put nails into the walls of apartment for posters?

Yes, but you should refill it at the end of the academic year. Remember, that when you leave the room it should be in the same condition in which you found it when you moved in. Drilling holes with an electric drill is not allowed!

No, you should always make sure that you are not disturbing others.

Yes, you are required to pay for any damage you cause.

How do I find cheap furniture?

The best way to get cheap furniture is from students! Other options include IKEA and various second-hand furniture stores.

You can get a bulb for free in the respective College office.

How do I use the Semester ticket?

Your semester ticket is valid for all trains, trams and buses within Bremen. With respect to trains outside Bremen, it is valid for the whole VBN network (Oldenburg, Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven etc) for RegionalBahn (RB), RegionalExpress (RE), Interregioexpress (IRE), and Interregio (IR). You can also use it to go to Hamburg, Hannover and Osnabrueck but only by RB or RE.

How loud can I play music during quiet hours?

During quiet hours no music should be heard outside your room (even your roommate should not be disturbed).

If I need to buy something urgently and the shops are closed where do I go?

You can shop at the gas station. Note that the prices are relatively higher there.

Directions: On your way to the Schoenebeck train station from the main entrance of Jacobs University, go over the flyover (above the train tracks) and then turn right at the crossroad. The gas station is to your left. You can’t miss it.

Is the smokers’ floor also a ‘loud’ floor?

No, the quiet hours apply equally to ALL floors i.e. there is no 'loud' floor in the College.

Is there a fax-machine available to students?

Yes. You can send and receive fax at the college office. The fax numbers are +49 (0) 421-200 5306 for Mercator College Office, +49 (0) 421 200 5606 for College III College Office.

Is there a psychologist available?

Yes, there are two psychologists (Frank Haber (4325) and Amina Oezelsel (4324)) on campus.

To whom do I complain if somebody plays loud music or breaks the quiet hours rule?

You can complain to the person directly, the floor rep or the Student court. Also in case you would like to avoid a direct confrontation you can submit an anonymous complaint on our website using the suggestion box.

Under what circumstances can somebody enter my room or the common part?

No one is allowed to enter your room without your prior permission. If some repair work must be done in your apartment by a technician, you will receive an e-mail informing you when he or she will come. If you have any objections you should provide a time when you (or somebody else you trust) can be there while the repairs take place. This rule is not valid in case of emergency.

What do I do if I lock myself out?

You can contact the college office manager (5302) or the RA (5301) on duty for help. Please keep in mind that the manager and RAs are not required to open your room at any time, even though they would do their best to help you when possible. If the college managers and/or RA on duty are not available, call the porters (4800) who will arrange a time when they can come and unlock your room.

What do I do if I want to change my room before the end of the academic year?

Normally, you are not allowed to change your room before the end of the academic year. In exceptional cases, where you have very strong reasons, please contact your respective college masters, the room allocation committee and college office mangers.

Where can I have a party?

You can have a party either in the newly renovated H3, the Other Side (the Student Bar) or in the Blue Lounge. You can get the keys for the above venues from the Porters if you leave your ID and signature. The key has to be returned the next day latest at 12:00 noon.

Where can I smoke?

If your room is located on the smokers’ floor, you can smoke in your room, i.e. 3rd floor in C buildings in Krupp and Mercator and 3rd floor in B building in College III. The other only option is the smokers’ lounge (the niche in the 3rd floor of D building in Krupp and Mercator, and smoking room on the 2nd floor in College III). Smoking in any other area within the colleges is absolutely prohibited.

Where do I find a scanner, CD-burner, color printer, multimedia projector (beamer)?

You can find them all in the College office. Please take cognisance of the opening hours of the college office. There also small fees for using the color printer and the multimedia projector.Color printing is 50 cents per page (A4)

Where do I get an installation CD’s for the printers, scanners and CD-burners?

The most current versions of the drivers are available on our website in the Drivers section. Alternatively you can ask for a driver CD in the College Office.

Where do I report if somebody is smoking in a prohibited area?

You can complain to the person directly and kindly ask him or her to refrain from smoking and respect the no-smoking regulations, ask the floor rep for support and intervention, complain to the respective college managers, or to directly file a complaint the Student court. Please note that facility students cannot enter your apartment without your approval. It might be therefore wise to make an appointment or give written permission to them to enter your apartment even in your absence in order to fix your facility problems.
