Personal Statement

Dear Reader,

It is a great honor to be a representative for Mercator College.

This role is one primarily of service and therefore, I ensure that I am always approachable. Please, take advantage of the opportunity the parliament allows for. Be an active member of this community and allow us to fulfill our role more effectively by communicating your thoughts and views. It is a great privilege to work on a team with Lukas and Taylor to ensure we are successful in this regard.

A man once asked the Buddha what the difference was between heaven and hell. The Buddha said he’d show him. He started with hell. He took the man to a huge hall and inside there was a magnificent banquet prepared with the best food imaginable. But all the people inside were suffering of hunger because their utensils were too long for them to eat the food.

He then took the man to another hall that was identical. The man was a bit surprised and asked, as he stood outside the hall, if heaven was exactly the same as hell. The Buddha took him inside and it was, except here the people were using the long utensils to feed each other.

In this spirit, I feel that all interactions in this community should be done with the second example in mind. I feel that only through working together can we make parliament (and life) as effective as possible. It requires a full commitment to these ideals of community.

I strongly believe the parliament can make a difference and want to continue to work with you to ensure these are tangible and effective in improving life on campus and beyond.

Yours always,

Tariq
